Embracing #MyWholeSelf in 2025: Why Bringing Your Whole Self to Work Matters
In 2025, the conversation around mental health and wellbeing at work has never been more important. That’s why My Whole Self, an initiative led by MHFA England, is something worth celebrating and championing on 11th March this year.
For too long, many of us may have felt pressure to leave parts of ourselves at the door when we step into work—whether that’s our mental health struggles, cultural identity, personal experiences, or even just the simple quirks that make us who we are. But the truth is, we work better, feel better, and thrive in our roles when we feel safe, valued, and accepted for who we truly are. That’s exactly what My Whole Self is about—creating inclusive and mentally healthy workplaces where everyone is encouraged to be themselves. We work with our students to encourage them to be their authentic selves, but do all staff feel that they can be who they really are at work?
What is My Whole Self?
Launched by MHFA England, My Whole Self is an annual movement dedicated to embracing diversity, championing mental health, and fostering inclusive workplace cultures. It encourages organisations to take a proactive approach in supporting staff wellbeing—not just with policies, but with real, meaningful action. This is about more than just saying the right things; it’s about creating environments where people feel truly supported and seen.
A mentally healthy workplace isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about recognising that everyone brings a unique perspective, a different set of experiences, and their own challenges to the table. By celebrating these differences rather than suppressing them, we build stronger, happier, and more productive teams.
Why My Whole Self Matters in 2025
We’ve made progress in normalising conversations around mental health, but there’s still work to do. Research shows that many employees still feel uncomfortable discussing mental health at work, and even more struggle with imposter syndrome, workplace anxiety, or the feeling that they have to “mask” who they are to fit in.
A workplace where people feel able to bring their whole self is a workplace where people thrive. When employees feel psychologically safe, they are more engaged, more creative, and more likely to stay in their jobs. In contrast, environments that encourage people to “fit a mould” often lead to stress, burnout, and disengagement.
For teachers, school leaders, and education professionals—sectors where mental health and wellbeing are under immense pressure—this movement is particularly vital. My Whole Self encourages schools and educational institutions to support staff wellbeing, promote open conversations, and create inclusive spaces where everyone, from teachers to students, can be themselves without fear of judgment.
How Can You Get Involved?
It’s not just about one day of awareness—it’s about creating lasting cultural change in workplaces. So, how can you be part of the My Whole Self movement in 2025?
Start conversations – Encourage open discussions about mental health, identity, and inclusivity in your workplace. A simple “How are you really doing?” can go a long way.
Lead by example – If you’re in a leadership role, model openness by sharing your own experiences. When leaders show vulnerability, it creates a ripple effect of psychological safety.
Create visible change – Use MHFA England’s My Whole Self resources to spark change in your workplace, whether it’s posters, conversation starters, or wellbeing activities.
Encourage connection – Team building isn’t just about awkward icebreakers. Create opportunities for authentic human connection—whether it’s a casual coffee chat, peer support networks, or a wellbeing check-in.
Advocate for workplace policies that support wellbeing – Push for meaningful changes like flexible working, mental health first aiders, Menopause Ambassadors and better support systems for staff.
Let’s Make 2025 the Year of Authenticity at Work
This year, let’s ditch the outdated workplace norms that force people to hide parts of themselves. Let’s celebrate differences, encourage open conversations, and make sure mental health and inclusivity are at the heart of every workplace.
No one should feel like they have to leave part of themselves behind to be successful. Let’s build workplaces where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered—because when we bring our whole selves to work, we all thrive.
Are you embracing #MyWholeSelf this year? We’d love to hear how your workplace is getting involved! Drop a comment and share your experiences. Let’s keep the conversation going!
